MATERIALS NEEDED |
- If a student is well enough to be at school then they must have their instrument and all of their materials with them. If they are too sick to play then they can finger along.
- If an instrument is being repaired then I will need a signed note from a parent indicating when it should be available for use in class. Students, however, should still bring their mouthpiece and other materials to class. If possible, a school instrument may be used while their instrument is being repaired.

Instrument Maintenance
Proper care of your instrument will ensure ease of playing and long life. Students often have difficulty playing their instrument due to bent keys, chipped reeds or simply because the instruments have not been cleaned for an extended period of time. All woodwinds should be cleaned at least every other day, including mouthpieces and reeds. All brass mouthpieces should be cleaned every other day and the entire instrument should be cleaned every two to three weeks. Reeds are expensive, but will last longer if properly cleaned and stored.
Step-up Instruments
Step-up instruments are higher quality, more expensive instruments than those normally rented or purchased by beginning band students. These instruments will get a better tone quality than beginner instruments but not as good as professional line instruments. Some families may decide to purchase one of these instruments for their student who is displaying a strong aptitude and work ethic towards music. It is generally recommended to wait until the 8th grade or high school to make such a purchase. Please see me with any questions you may have about this or specific questions regarding brand names.
